Mavericks Sit Four Key Players In Must-Win Game Vs Bulls As They 'Prioritize Lottery Position'

Apr 7, 2023 4:29 PM

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Kyrie Irving, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber and Christian Wood in Friday's game versus the Chicago Bulls, which is a must-win to remain in play-in contention.

Luka Doncic, however, will play in the game as he went on record indicating he was not interested in sitting while they remained in play-in contention. Chicago will sit DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Patrick Beverley as they are assured of finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.

"This is, frankly, just a transparent tank job," said Tim MacMahon on NBA Today. "The Mavericks decided they would rather prioritize lottery position than the slim chance of trying to fight for a play-in spot.

"I talked to somebody in the organization today and they said 'Look, as more games passed our destiny became bleaker and bleaker.'

"The one thing the Mavericks have potentially a little bit of control of is not their ability to get in the play-in, and by the way, they don't believe they're capable of doing anything in the playoffs if they did miraculously get there. They can have a little bit of control, perhaps, if they finish top-10 in the lottery odds. They are tied with the Bulls, who by the way are resting some key players today as well, for the 10th best lottery odds right now. Why is that so important? The Mavericks' pick is top-10 protected. They owe the New York Knicks a top-10 protected pick as the final payment of the Kristaps Porzingis trade.

"Look, this is a bad situation for the Mavs. The worst case scenario though is they land 11th in the lottery and that ain't their pick. That's going to Jalen Brunson's team up there in New York."

Jordan Hawkins Leaving UConn For NBA Draft

Apr 7, 2023 3:59 PM

Jordan Hawkins will enter the 2023 NBA draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility after winning the national championship with UConn.

"Hearing my name called on draft night will be a blessing," Hawkins said. "I worked so hard for this, me and my dad, we've been through so much.

"When I first stepped on campus in Storrs, I was a little kid, just 160 pounds. I didn't know the college game. Coach [Dan] Hurley threw me into the fire. He guided me through it. It means the world for me having him, having this opportunity. He told me sophomore year I need to step my game up, make a name for myself. It's amazing what we did together as a team."

Hawkins is the No. 15 prospect in ESPN's draft projections.

Mavericks Could Shut Down Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving With Eye On Keeping Top-10 Pick

Apr 3, 2023 11:57 AM

The Dallas Mavericks could shut down Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving for the final games of the season if they completely fall out of the play-in picture.

As of Monday, the Mavericks are one game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for 10th. The Thunder also own the tiebreaker over the Mavericks. When pivoting to the lottery, the Mavericks are currently 10th and could get to ninth depending on how they and the Utah Jazz finish.

If their pick is outside the top-10, it conveys to the New York Knicks.

"I'm told the organization is seriously considering the possibility of shutting down those two guys," said Shams Charania. "They have a top-10 protected pick. Being out of the play-in race, it behooves them not to try to keep their pick and at that point you have the flexibility of potentially having that top-10 pick, you have three first round picks you can trade this offseason to go get a star and potentially more players on the marketplace. They are going to be one of the more active teams."

Cason Wallace Leaves Kentucky For NBA Draft

Apr 1, 2023 10:39 AM

University of Kentucky freshman guard Cason Wallace is declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft. Wallace is a projected top-10 pick in this June's draft.

In his lone season with the Wildcats, Wallace averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He shot 45% from the field and 35% on three-pointers.

The 6-foot-4 combo guard is considered one of the best defenders in this draft class. Wallace's wingspan and length as a perimeter defender are intriguing to teams. He also showed an ability to play as an on-ball facilitator late in the season. That increases Wallace's value, as he showed he can be more than just a scorer.
