NBA Sought Extra Rookie Scale Year From NBPA In Exchange For Lowering Age Rule

Apr 3, 2023 11:42 AM

The NBA and NBPA discussed the possibility of eliminating one-and-done and lowering the minimum age as part of their new collective bargaining agreement, but neither side felt passionate enough about the issue to push for it.

In exchange for allowing high school players to enter the NBA directly, the NBA reportedly wanted an extra rookie scale year, which would delay when they can sign an extension or become a restricted free agent.

"I think the league wanted the rookie scale to go another year so it would be another year before players could get their rookie extension or restricted free agency," said Adrian Wojnarowski. "That was something they obviously didn't get in talks, but I think was tied a little bit to one-and-done."

Under the current system, players can  sign an extension after Year 3 and become a restricted free agent after Year 4. If an extra rookie scale season was given, then they would have to wait until Year 4 to sign an extension and Year 5 to become a restricted free agent.

Part of the reason why there was less urgency from both sides on the issue is because it is no longer a moral one due to the increase in ways non-NBA players are able to earn income whether it is through G League Ignite, Overtime Elite or NIL.

NBA, NBPA Won't Lower Minimum Age For Draft As Part Of Next CBA

Mar 31, 2023 4:06 PM

The NBA and NBPA have tabled the possibility of lowering the minimum age to enter the draft as part of its next collective bargaining agreement, which will mean the "one-and-done" rule will continue.

The league wanted to eliminate the rule, but the players wanted to ensure veteran players would be taken care of as part of the change.

NBA owners and executives were largely indifferent or fully against returning to high school gymnasiums to evaluate players, and even less enthusiastic about that idea without concessions from the NBPA on providing increased access to pre-draft player medical information and increased participation in several elements of the draft combine.

The rise of financial opportunities for non-NBA players has softened the NBPA's belief there needed to be an aggressive push for lowering the draft limi

Bronny James Tabbed As Top-10 Pick In ESPN's First 2024 NBA Mock Draft

Feb 22, 2023 8:27 AM

Bronny James is projected as a top-10 selection in ESPN's first mock draft for 2024, which is significantly higher than many have expected based on his recruiting ranking.

James is a 6-foot-4 senior combo guard at Sierra Canyon School in California. He's undecided on his college of choice, as of this moment. With the NBA and NBPA seemingly no closer to eliminating the "one-and-done" rule in collective bargaining, James will likely attend one year of college before becoming draft eligible.

James, who is the eldest son of LeBron James, will become draft eligible for the first time in 2024, should he enter the draft after one year in college. James could also choose to play for the G League Ignite next season and get a jump-start on his professional career that way.

The draft eligibility of the younger James will coincide with the elder James having the ability to become an unrestricted free agent by declining his player option for the 2024-25 season. The elder James has indicated he'd like to play with his son in the NBA before he retires.

Ohio State, Oregon, USC, Michigan Considered Possible Schools For Bronny James

Jan 20, 2023 10:52 AM

Bronny James is currently the highest rated point guard of the 2023 high school class who has yet to commit to a college. James will most likely wait until after his high school season to take more college visits and a late decision is expected.

Ohio State, Oregon, USC and Michigan have emerged as possible landing spots for James.

James took an official visit to Ohio State in early September, which is only known campus visit.

Given the fact that James already signed a Nike shoe deal, his likely college path will be a Nike program.

NBA, NBPA Have Yet To Make Progress On Eliminating Age Limit For Draft

Dec 5, 2022 3:11 PM

The NBA and NBPA have yet to make progress on eliminating the age-limit rule as part of its next collective bargaining agreement.

The current rule states that players must be one year removed from high school graduation and turning 19 in the calendar year of the draft.

There are significant hurdles that would need to be resolved in order to change the rule.

Adam Silver has gone on record preferring the rule be changed.

NBA To Allow Teams To Scout High School Players At Key Events

Dec 5, 2022 3:09 PM

The NBA will begin to allow teams to attend several key high school events featuring many of the best non-draft eligible players in America.

The NBA is responding to a desire that team front offices have long had to gain greater access to evaluate elite prospects prior to entering college.

Shaedon Sharpe, Mitchell Robinson and Darius Bazley are three players who sat out their season before being draft-eligible.

Scouts want to evaluate these types of players earlier in their careers.

The three events that have now been certified for scouts to attend are the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas in mid-December; the Spalding HoopHall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts in mid-January; and the Geico Nationals in Fort Myers, Florida in late March.
